Nadi Shastra, an ancient method of diagnosis, involves assessing physical health by analyzing the pulse and its different qualities. While Western medicine primarily uses pulse to monitor heart rate and rhythm, in Ayurveda, Nadi Pariksha, or pulse diagnosis, is a specialized practice performed by Ayurvedic doctors. It provides comprehensive insights into the patient’s physiological and psychological states beyond just heart rate.
In Ayurveda, the pulse is examined to understand the balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas in the body. Vata governs movement and is associated with qualities like dryness, lightness, and coldness. Pitta governs metabolism and is associated with qualities like heat, sharpness, and oiliness. Kapha governs structure and is associated with qualities like heaviness, coldness, and stability. By analyzing the pulse, Ayurvedic practitioners can identify imbalances in these doshas and tailor treatments accordingly.
Nadi Pariksha holds immense significance in Ayurveda, helping practitioners assess Tridoshas and various aspects of the patient’s health. Traditional texts like Sarangadhara Samhita, YogaRatnakara, Basavarajeeyam, and Bhavaprakasha provide detailed instructions for pulse diagnosis.
Although Ayurveda has a long-standing tradition of pulse-based diagnosis, it’s a subjective practice heavily reliant on the physician’s skill. Recent research focuses on scientifically analyzing pulse waveforms obtained from Tridosha locations to further understand Ayurvedic diagnosis. According to Ayurveda, a balanced state of Tridoshas indicates good health, while imbalances can lead to diseases.
