Have you ever pondered whether devotion to a deity is genetically influenced, or if it simply evolves through generations, ingrained as a habitual belief? This question has danced through my mind frequently. While I do believe in a singular higher power, certain gods or goddesses resonate with me, their names instinctively springing forth in moments of contemplation or prayer.
The inclination towards divinity appears to be a fundamental aspect of humanity. Throughout history, we have crafted myriad religions, each asserting itself as the true revelation from the divine. Atheism, in contrast, stands as a curious outlier, with even its name containing the shadow of ‘God.’
A long time ago, a psychologist named William James said that our religious experiences are what really matter, not the specific rules of any one religion. He thought we all feel a bit off about the world sometimes, and we find comfort in connecting with something bigger.
Nowadays, scientists like Dean Hamer say that our genes might play a role in our faith. He’s found a gene related to a trait called self-transcendence, which is about feeling connected to something spiritual, even if it’s not tied to any particular religion.Hamer’s argument centers on the identification of a gene linked to a personality trait known as self-transcendence, gauged through the “Temperament and Character Inventory.” Self-transcendence, as defined by psychologists, denotes spiritual sensations independent of organized religion—beyond belief in a deity or adherence to religious practices.
Conclusion
Whether viewed through psychological or scientific lenses, the belief in a singular divine entity persists. Across generations, this belief manifests in various forms, shaped by the narratives passed down through lineages. Such belief systems serve as pillars in navigating life’s trials, instilling hope and resilience. Regardless of its genetic underpinnings, embracing the concept of a higher power fosters a collective faith that transcends individual differences.
